The Tatkal scheme is open to all Indian citizens applying for a fresh passport or a reissue. Unlike some government fast-track schemes, Tatkal does not require the applicant to prove a specific reason for urgency. Any adult who pays the Tatkal fee can access the accelerated track.
However, certain applicant categories are excluded from Tatkal:

Getting a Tatkal passport fast in India begins on the Passport Seva portal. The online route is faster, more trackable, and does not require a separate offline application.
Visit passportindia.gov.in and log in or register a new account using your mobile number and email address. First-time users need to complete email verification before accessing the application form.
Select "Apply for Fresh Passport / Reissue of Passport." On the first screen of the form, you will see an option to choose between Normal and Tatkal application types. Select Tatkal. Fill in all personal, address, and educational details accurately. The form will not allow submission with incomplete fields.
Payment is made online through net banking, UPI, or debit or credit card. The system calculates the total fee automatically based on the booklet type and the Tatkal surcharge. Confirm the payment and save the receipt reference number.
Immediately after payment, the portal redirects to the appointment booking screen. Tatkal applicants are shown a separate appointment slot pool which typically has earlier dates than the standard track. Select the nearest available Passport Seva Kendra and confirm the date and time.
Applicants in areas with limited internet access or those who prefer an in-person process can download the passport application form from the Passport Seva portal, fill it manually, and submit it directly at the Passport Seva Kendra.
The Tatkal category must be clearly marked on the form at the time of submission. Payment for offline applications is accepted at the counter via demand draft or designated payment modes.
